For this assisted living retirement community my vision went beyond the predictable, over-used imagery usually associated with senior living facilities. The owner, a savvy advocate of the arts, supported the use of artwork that would be lively and engaging while remaining accessible to the residents. The artwork includes contemporary materials and fresh interpretations to enhance the still life, flower, landscape and nostalgia subject matter.
I personalized the project by commissioning local photographs (D) of sites familiar to the residents. Elevator lobbies provide welcome seating and the opportunity to enjoy the photographs.
Original artwork appears in the main lobbies (A), private and community dining rooms, the library and executive offices. Nearly one hundred posters break up the long corridors linking the four wings (F) and are used in the resident and staff lounges and other multi-purpose rooms. Decorative frames enrich the artwork and the interiors while respecting the budget.
Five years after the completion of Suffield by the River I was pleased to be called back for the new addition, RIVER'S WATCH. Less formal interior design allowed for the development of the original themes with fresh, upbeat artwork. The new space also includes a main lobby (B, C), rest areas (E) and posters along the corridors (G). The two projects comprise 110,000 square feet.
