The challenge was to create a work of art that would complement the materials used in the vast dining room--stainless steel cables, copper fixtures, perforated steel, brick and concrete. [A]
A requirement was that the artwork would be strong enough to be effective from 100 feet and intimate enough to be interesting if one was seated just below it. It needed to carry a two-story, fifty foot wide, very red and visually active brick wall. It must be accessible to the population for whom it is intended and it must accommodate the budget. [A]
I accomplished this by commissioning an artist who used recycled copper roofing material and copper tubing for her brightly painted wall relief. [A]
A second hard-edged rectangular piece on a smaller adjacent wall complements the curvilinear abstract leaf shapes of the larger piece. [B]
Both have hand-painted marks and rich texture for close viewing while the bold shapes and high-contrast colors read well from a distance and on the brick wall. The familiar materials and fittings provide an accessible entry to the artworks for the employees of this utilities company. As always, the budget parameters were met.
