For the insurance and investment giant headquartered in Hartford, Connecticut, I began with the renovation of the classically detailed conference facility on the 22nd floor of their landmark building. Not wanting to distract from the spectacular views, I selected an abstract painting evocative of the surrounding sky. [C]
In contrast, a contemporary landscape painting was selected for the more traditional enclosed elevator lobby. [D] I expanded the art program to their expansive lobby, atrium and theater complex, which service both the corporation and the public.
For a concrete wall in a seating and pass-through area of the city-block lobby, I commissioned a powerful ceramic wall relief that can be viewed from many vantage points and stands up to the strong surroundings. [A,B] The strong strokes of the painted surface engage a nearby viewer while propelling another visitor across the space. By using painted panels rather than more labor intensive constructed units I made the most of the budget for the largest piece possible.
For the breakout area of a training center the artwork is intended to inspire "thinking outside of the box [E]." The entire project is in excess of 400,000 square feet.
