The art program for Clairol was developed when their New York City executive and administrative departments joined the research, development and manufacturing campus in Stamford, Connecticut, creating their new world headquarters. Several-site specific art commissions were created for the two-story atrium lobby reflecting Clairol’s forward presence in the international beauty industry. For the reception area, the artist's collage mural celebrates hair by contrasting the free-flowing locks of Botticelli's famous Venus with the tight coiffure of a da Vinci drawing. [B]
Two staircases flank the entry lobby. For the head of each one we created a photo collage in a grid pattern made up of Clairol imagery. The artworks combine photographs of raw materials, end products and the resulting beautiful hair. The dramatic graphic design produced by the repeat pattern of the grid compels the viewer up the stairs as the specifics of each photograph come into view. [A]
